1.2 Course description

The aim of this course is to equip students who do not have a first degree in law with general knowledge and understanding of the Hong Kong legal system, as well as practical skills for legal research, analysis and reasoning, in order to lay a solid foundation for the study of other substantive law subjects. The course will provide an introduction to legal systems in general and focusing on the legal system of the Hong Kong SAR in particular. It will introduce students to the sources and hierarchy of law, the constitutional arrangement of the HKSAR, civil and criminal justice processes, key institutions including the courts and the legal profession, and fundamental principles of law.

Learning Outcomes

2.1 Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) for this course

CLO 1 Understand the development and salient features of major legal traditions in the world, so as to appreciate the context in which the Hong Kong legal system is situated.

CLO 2 Understand the salient features of the Hong Kong legal system and acquire the basic concepts of major law topics, so as to lay a sound foundation for the study of substantive law subjects.

CLO 3 Understand the nature of case law and the precedent system, as well as statutes, the legislative process and common law statutory interpretation.

CLO 4 Master foundational legal research skills, including using digital resources and Gen AI, and be able to conduct legal research independently.

CLO 5 Develop effective legal analytical skills and be able to identify and critically analyse legal issues in given factual scenarios.

Learning Activities

4.1 Learning Activity Plan

Seminar: 3 hours / week for 12 teaching weeks
Private study time: 9.5 hours / week for 12 teaching weeks

Remarks: the normative student study load per credit unit is 25 ± 5 hours (ie. 150 ± 30 hours for a 6-credit course), which includes all learning activities and experiences within and outside of classroom, and any assessment task and examinations and associated preparations.
